About Me

I was born in Wisconsin on a warm, summer day in August. During my childhood, it was the art classes that consistently fueled my inspiration and kept me motivated in school. I got fairly good at drawing, delved into the intricacies of color theory, while also building a foundation in various artistic techniques.

In 1995, I received my first purchase award from the Wisconsin Union. Two years later, I earned my B.S. in Art from UW-Madison. In 2006, I founded Timothy Hughes Photographics to pursue my passion for photography and visual art. I can be easily reached at (608) 345-9329 or via email (preferred): timothyhughes@charter.net.

I use a full-frame digital SLR camera and prefer utilizing prime lenses (fixed focal-length) whenever possible. Drawing from my extensive experience as a graphic designer, I possess a keen understanding of how to deliver impactful images that meet the demanding standards of art directors and photo editors, resulting in exceptional layouts. Rather than leaving things to chance, I take a systematic approach to assignments.

I operate a compact photo studio located in downtown Madison, equipped with a cargo elevator, makeup area, garment steamer, an array of props, and access to many outdoor photo locations. Housed within Bedford Square, the historic brownstone building is over 100 years old, but it hasn’t lost its charm! It works perfectly for (small) product shoots, test shoots, and portraits. Larger shoots can be done at one of my favorite large rental  studios in town or on location.

Since embarking on my journey as a photographer, I have had the privilege of showcasing my work at renowned galleries such as The Peter Jones Gallery in Chicago, Pico House Gallery in L.A., Echo Gallery in Chicago, Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, Bert’s Warehouse Theatre in Detroit, Kimia Lounge, Infusion Gallery in L.A., and various other venues.

I’ve received several awards for my photo work and have art residing in the Wisconsin Union, Kinsey Institute (Indiana University), and Wisconsin Historical Society permanent collections. In my free time, I love road racing (having over 60 triathlons/running races under my belt), and giving lectures on photography or other more eclectic topics.

I work with an awesome network of industry professionals including models, hair/makeup artists, wardrobe stylists & photo producers who can help on shoots as needed.

I’m very fortunate to have hundreds published photos which have appeared in such websites and magazines as: Glamour, Seventeen, Guitar World, Travel + Leisure, and Madison Magazine. Feel free to contact me to view my print portfolio or for reprint inquiries. I am able to travel internationally, my passport is current, and I love to work!
